Construction Robots

Carmen Mk-4 Handiman Workplace Android

Carmen Robotic's Handiman is a rugged android for use on construction sites, in warehouses, or for general building and maintenance. The Handiman is a basic sapient worker replacement, designed to carry out most tasks a Human could perform that do not require creativity or high-level decision making – such as pipelaying, masonry, welding, cutting, drilling, rivetting, digging, electrical work, laying cable, framing, siding, finishing, pouring contrete or making molds, installing insulation, doors, windows, trim, flooring, and so on. They have good algorithms for packing and are strong enough to carry heavy loads, so they are often used for warehouse or teamster work. They are tough enough to withstand moderate abuse, sealed against the weather, and hardened to protect against electrical accidents and interference.

Although more-or-less humanoid in shape, the Handiman has been given a utilitarian design without overt aestetic elements or attempts to closely reproduce the Human form except insofar as to keep their proportions correct so that they can use tools, vehciles, and structures designed for Human use. The exterior is usually colored with contrasting black against high visibility yellow and orange with retro-reflective stripes. A display screen is used for a face, to allow it to interface better with sapient co-workers and supervisors.

The Handiman model is used extensively as a logistics robot in the Republican Army, differing only in having a drab olive or khaki paint job, where it moves supplies around in warehouses, loads trucks, performs everyday maintenance, and serves as reloaders for combat bots that are incapable of reloading themselves. RA models are likely to have additional software installed: Shoot +0, Evade +0, Targeting +2. They are not intended to be used in combat, but if the enemy attacks a base or convoy using Handimans it is useful if they can shoot back.

Chang-MacDonald CR-7 Construction Tractor Robot

The CR-7 is a heavy construction robot, used for digging, demolition, and hauling. It is a stocky quadruped, with a pair of arms ending in blade-like hands that can dig, scoop, level, scrape, grade, and snowplow; similar to the work done by modern bulldozers, backhoes, and front-end loaders. With its arms, it is also used for tasks such as erecting heavy frameworks, installing large machinery, and placing pre-printed concrete blocks.

Chang-MacDonald MT-44 MegaTermite Construction Printer Robot

The MegaTermite is a robot for 3-D printing buildings. A large overhead arm holds a printing nozzle connected to a large reservoir of concrete slurry by a flexible hose. It walks on eight folding legs, for road transport uses a wheeled undercarriage. The MegaTermite's primary use is to drive onto freshly prepared foundation, extend its arm, and print rapid-set concrete. The print continues, laying down the structure of a building. The Megatermite typically works in coordination with smaller robots which lay down piping, rebar, data cable, wiring, electronics, and other utilities as the walls are printed. A fully supplied MegaTermite can build 1,400 m² of floor space in 100 kiloseconds.

With different reservoirs, the MegaTermite can also print metal, ceramics, polymers, nanocellulose, glass, and other materials, with dyes or microstructure pigments for color. However, the more complex the materials and construction, the slower the fabrication and the higher the cost of the resulting building.

The VJH tools are interchangeable, and can be swapped out with about a minute's work. Each is approximately 30 kg in mass (this mass is already accounted for in the robot's stat description, in the form of it's Load sub-attribute).

Used against immobile objects, these tools can assume an automatic 12 for the 2d6 Pen roll and Pen can accumulate from action to action until the object is cut through. Alternately, for tools causing Hack, Slash, Beam, or Abrade type damage excess Pen can be traded for increased Wound to cut through thin or flimsy objects faster (every RS Pen is decreased Wound increases by the same number of RS). The width of a cut is value of [Wound + 3], the diameter of a hole is value of [wound + 2].

  • Jackhammer: Normally used for smashing through hard materials like rock, pavement, or concrete.
  • Power Saw: A gigantic electric saw. Different varieties have circular, reciprocating, or chain blades. Benchmark – cuts Armor Score +9 carboplast at 20 cm/s with the disruptor active, or 2 cm/s without the augmentation.
  • Drill: A giant drill bit, 2 cm diameter and 1.5 meters long. Benchmark – can drill a 2 cm diameter hole in Armor Score +9 carboplast (3.5 mm thick) in 0.17 seconds, or 1.7 seconds without disruptor augmentation.
  • Auger: A 10 cm diameter screw used for digging holes. Material drilled through is conveyed up out of the hole by the screw action of the auger.
  • Disruptor Blade: A disruptor blade up to 3.5 m long. Benchmark – can drill a 2 cm diameter hole through carboplast in 0.17 seconds. Cuts through Armor Score +9 carboplast (3.5 mm thick) at 20 cm/s.
  • Disintegrator: A disintegrator ray used for polishing, abrading, grinding, mulching, excavating, and reducing materials to powder. The beam starts to lose focus after 14 meters. Benchmark – can drill a 20 cm wide hole through Armor Score +9 carboplast in 4.5 seconds, and cut through Armor Score +9 carboplast at 6 cm/s once drilled through.
  • Laser Torch: Used for cutting, welding, and drilling. At full power, drills holes 0.4 cm in diameter and up to 15 m long before the beam starts to lose focus; reducing the power can reduce the hole width but also reduces hole length and drilling rate (Wound scales as (score of [Penetration])/2, focus range scales linearly with Penetration). Benchmark – can cut through Armor Score +9 carboplast (3.5 mm thick) at 25 cm/s; drills 0.4 cm diameter holes in Armor Score +9 carboplast in 0.025 seconds.
Emergent BuildBot 48-Z

The BuildBot 48-Z is a robot designed for metalworking and carpentry, and for laying high lines and pipes. It has two normal arms, and an additional four mount arms. One mount arm houses the focal array of a laser torch (the main laser generator, power supply, and cooling is in a module attached to the robot's back, and piped to the focal array with fiber optic cables); the remaining three can switch between different tools, commonly a riveter, a nail gun, a power saw, a power drill, or a bonder that fastens hard non-metallic materials (such as carboplast or nacre). The saw and drill are disruptor-augmented, the drill has a revolving automatic drill bit switcher. The 48-Z is often called on to work in high places, in difficult to access locations, on narrow girders, or tall scaffolding. Consequently, it is designed to be an agile climber than can clamber to where it is needed and firmly affix itself to a surface while working. It has four legs with gecko grips to allow good climbing agility. The combination of multiple legs and arms makes it look something like a mechanical spider-mantis.
