Carmen Turtle TT1 |
Carmen Robotics took their basic FloorBot frame, removed the cleaning equipment, and added enhanced sensors to produce the Turtle, a popular line of watch robots for interior security.
Its job is to move around a facility, feeding telemetry to a base monitoring computer to detect unusual or off-normal situations.
This can include damaged equipment, hazardous situations, or unauthroized personnel.
If necessary, the Tutrle can sound an audible alert – often an ear-splitting warbling siren.
Like the FloorBot, it is a low, flat rectangle on simple motorized castor wheels.
Its arms have been removed, as its main purpose is sensory rather than actuation.
A turret has been added, mounting the sensors and flashlight.
The Turtle is intended to give a low cost appreach for roving surveillance of a facility. Thus, the Turtle itself does not come with significant perceptual analysis software, which would drive up the price. Instead, its telemetry is relayed to a central monitoring computer, which can use its own Perception and Skill (Spot) software on the Turtle's data feeds.
Very often, the computer will also run a skill (Read Intent) program to scan for suspicious behavior.

Carmen Pavaise PVS-3a |
The success of the Turtle TT1 prompted Carmen Robotics to expand on the basic concept.
Their Pavaise is somewhat similar; a robot looking a bit like a large rectangular upside-down trash can with a head on top.
The front of the "can" is a display screen.
The Pavaise is used for a more public-facing side of security.
In addition to providing a video and audio feed to monitor for hazardous, criminal, and off-normal events, the Pavaise is programmed to assist customers with inquiries and information.
The pavaise has only basic wheels, and is intended for use only on hard, flat surfaces.
Like the Turtle, the Pavaise generally relies on an external computer to monitor and analyze its telemetry. The central facility computer will usually run a Perception program, as well as Skill (Spot) and Skill (Read Intent) programs.
This allows for a relatively low cost fleet of roving security monitors with just one central up-front cost for the observation software.

Carmen Night Crawler OSR-2.6 |
With the popularity of their indoor sentinels, Carmen Robotics begain to diversify into watch robots that could traverse more rugged terrain.
The Night Crawler Off-road Security Robot (OSR) is a six-wheeled off-road sentinel with a beefed-up, articulated suspension, high powered motors, and an enhanced sensor suite.
The sensor turret also houses a high-power searchlight.
It has not gone unnoticed that this turret also has unused mount points that could, in theory, also hold ranged weapons; or that its computer is somewhat overpowered for its requirements so that it could run targeting programs.
Those with a more aggressive approach to security will often arm the Night Crawler with stunners and tanglers, or even lethal weapons like battle lasers or needle rifles.
NightCrawlers have some on-board processing for initial analysis of their sensor data, allowing for a degree of independence.
However, as with many other observational security robots, the NightCrawler's telemetry is usually also analyzed by a base computer with a higher Awareness, running programs such as Skill (Spot) and Skill (Read Intent).

Nommo Stryx Surveillance Drone |
Nommo Industry's Strix model is a typical ornithopter surveillance drone, about the size of a magpie or small owl.
It is a two-winged ornithopter with legs for perching. It uses a high-grade camera for keeping watch on the area below, and a highly sensitive microphone to pick up and pinpoint faint sounds.
They Stryx is not designed to analyze its sensor feeds itself. The telemetry is sent to a remote computer for processing. In this way, a fleet of many Stryx drones can provide coverage of an area without an excessive expense in software licenses.

Rebond ESD-21 Argus Police Drone |
Rebond's ESD-21 Argus is a police enforcement and surveillance drone. It is a whisper rotorcraft, with four tilt-rotor ducted fans, designed for low audio signature. The body is large enough to carry tools for the job while remaining small enough to hover down most interior passageways.
The Argus has a single arm with a manipulator hand, and two arms for mounting equipment.
A typical Argus comes with a restraint carbine E-stunner and a civvy I-shot revolver.
The I-shot is mounted on one if the mount arms, a beam pointer for the E-stunner on the other.
A common loadout is a full revolver cylinder of tangler rounds, although these may be switched out with other ordinance depending on the situation; SWAT operations may require smoke, sleep, or paralysis gas while riot control operations will use tear gas. (In the stat block, the E-stuner's dose is given in brackets in the Wound column, and the tangler's Brawn and Size are, respectively, in brackets under the Pen and Wound columns.)
Argus drones are used in some areas to provide roving surveillance to compliment fixed camera installations, coupled with the knock-down power to capture criminals and deter crime. In other places, Arguses are not deployed on their own but as tools to assist sapient police officers.
A patrol officer can use the extra set of eyes, can have the drone check out hard to reach or see places, and can rely on its quick and accurate shooting to capture and subdue criminals and to protect her back when she goes into danger.
Investigators and forensics teams will use them to capture a video recording of crime scenes. Explosive ordinance disposal teams use them for remote placement of sensors and tools without risking sapient lives.

Carmen Mk-8 Sentinel Security Android |
Continuing with their robotic security line, Carmen Robotics produces the Mk-8 Sentinel. It is an android, designed to give it extra presence to deter troublemakers and the versatility to use a wide variety of tools and go places a Human could go. The sentinel is designed to be capable and athletic, yet still affordable. While popular for private security forces, it is also marketed toward police where it finds a niche as a lower-cost alternative to the XM-Thor.

Emergent XM-Thor First Responder Android |
The XM-Thor is a rugged, high performance android designed to act in a first responder role.
Its powerful frame is brutally utilitarian in form, almost elegant in its emphasis on function over aesthetics.
The dark carboplast armor is usually emblazoned with the colors and logo of its service department.
A blank face has a visor-like strip for its enhanced camera sensor.
A turret on the left shoulder houses a powerful searchlight.
XM-Thors are strong enough to lift rubble, break through walls, and carry victims to safety. They have basic medical programming, enough to stabilize a victim for long enough to get to real medical care. Because their duties often involve dealing with the public, they are equipped with advanced personality simulating software.
Beyond that, their software is customized for their job.
The example listed below is for police work.
Non-police varieties will not have targeting software, or Shoot, Escape and Restrain, Tactics, or Grapple skills.
The task software will be switched out for more appropriate tasks for the job – a firefighter model might have Task (fight structure fires, fight rangeland fires, fight forest fires, accident response, disaster reponse, first aid, cyber defense).
Paramedic varieties increase the Heal software and skill up to +2.
The on-board computer is over-powered to allow for additional customization.
XM-Thors are equipped with an advanced sensor suite. A multiscanner allows the robot to scan for life signs, permitting finding victims buried under rubble, in burning buildings, or hiding fugatives; the multiscanner imaging radar lets the robot see through dense smoke or other poor visibility conditions. An advanced UV-vis-IR optical camera complements the scanner, allowing thermographic imaging for picking out warm bodies and allowing a different way of seeing through smoke and fog; as well as advanced low-light sensing and hyperspectral analysis.
And a high sensitivity microphone allows the robot to pick up and pinpoint faint sounds, such as breathing or movement.
In the field, a Human or other sapient overseer usually directs between one and five XM-Thors.
