Ornithopters are robots that fly with wings. Verge ornithopters are usually "whisper drones"; using wings inspired by owls to allow them to move without significant noise. Most also have wings articulated for efficient hovering. Both two-winged and four-winged designs are common.
Emergent TTX-23 HoverBot Whisper Drone |
The TTX-23 HoverBot is one of Emergent Robotic's more popular models. It is a general purpose whisper drone about the size (and roughly the shape) of a red-tailed hawk.
Its legs are used for perching, or for grasping and manipulating objects while in flight.
It is mainly used recreationally or for general multi-purpose tasks, although it is commonly outfitted and programmed for more focused tasks such as line inspection, surveying, cinematography, light package delivery, or agricultural monitoring.
Consequently, it has various sensor upgrade packages available, including professional grade cameras and microphones, and lidar scanners.
Due to the computation limits of its hardware, the HoverBot's software is run on an external machine and synched up to the hoverbot via its wireless link. This allows the user to make use of all the features on his computer (such as enhanced natural speech processing, personality simulators, and personal assistant software) to control the robot.

Emergent RBN-88 HummerBuddy Whisper Drone |
The RBN-88 HummerBuddy is a wildly popular model of micro whisper drone. It is a two-winged flyer, roughly the size of a robin, with a pair of legs for perching. Their small size and low cost makes them almost ubiquitous.
They are common for basic tasks, such as following their designated person around, or flying to a place their person indicates to check it out.
It is the base of many different variants, such as the light buddy, that holds a readling light and and flashlight and provides illumination for its person (add $2.5 to the cost to account for the lighting).
The HummerBuddy itself is too small for the processing power to run most of its software. While it can run it's own "brain" needed for its Coordination, it is generally synched to a nearby computer which runs a task program good for following, fetching, carrying, and putting things places, as well as filming targets and going to designated places.

Nommo GlowBug Whisper Drone |
The GlowBug is Nommo Industries' answer to the Light Buddy – a whisper drone for interactive illumination. Usually deployed in swarms, GlowBugs are quad-winged drones roughly the size of a large dragonfly. Each has a single adjustable omni-directional light that illuminates a base range of up to 2 m.
Alternately, the light can be set to illuminate only in one hemisphere out to 3 m, a 1:1 cone out to 5 m, or a 1:10 cone out to 80 m.
An interesting variant is the FlareBug, which replaces the gentle glow of the reading light with the flare package of an 18mm warhead (add $2 to the price). This drone can in turn be folded for packaging inside an 18mm shell, allowing it to be launched to altitude from any 18mm flare gun and then hover in place, or move in response to directions from a synched computer. Swarms of FlareBots are often packaged in the flare payloads of larger shells - six fit in a 30mm warhead, 12 in a 40mm warhead, 40 in a 60mm warhead, 100 in an 80mm warhead, and 180 in a 100mm warhead.
The GlowBug's task software can't run on its internal computer. It usually runs on an external device wirelessly synched to the robot.
After their introduction, GlowBugs quickly became popular cat toys – inexpensive fluttering robots that could provide endless hours of feline entertainment. However, the original GlowBugs were not robust enough to stand up to a cat's teeth and claws. Nommo industries responded by adding enough protection to withstand the attentions of most moggies, and released a free Task program for cat entertainment.
