Nimravides was a group of cats with large saber-tooth fangs. They were not true saber tooths, and despite their name they were true cats, not members of the Nimravidae family of near-cats. Most had a general body shape and lifestyle similar to the false scimitar cats, but Nimravides catacopsis was very similar to the scimitar cats of genus Machairodus. Since Nimravides was not particularly closely related to either group, this is a case of parallel evolution. Nimravides lived in North America during the middle and late Miocene.
