Raccoon dogs are short-legged dogs from east Asia that look much like the North American Raccoon. In the early 20th century they were introduced into northern Europe, where they have become a pest. They are excellent climbers, and are regularly found up in trees. Their fur is thick and warm, allowing them to survive harsh winters. In addition, they hibernate in winter, then gorge themselves during the rest of the year to build up fat for their next long winter nap - if they are not at least Fat by autumn they are unlikely to survive until spring. Raccoon dogs are omnivores, in addition to a variety of small animals, insects, fish, shellfish, eggs, and carrion they eat bulbs, rhizomes, grains, nuts, fruit, mellons, and tomatoes. They do not bark, but will make a growl-whine sound.
