The water buffalo is a large, heavily built bovid found in India and Southeast Asia. It is generally found in swamps, river valleys, and wet grasslands and loves to wallow in mud or submerge itself in water. They form herds of about 30 individuals led by an older cow and sometimes accompanied by a bull. Males that do not live with a female herd form bachelor herds of about 10 animals. Water buffalo have long been domesticated, and are valued for their milk, hide, and as a beast or burden. They are docile and gentle with humans they know.
