Dogfish sharks are smallish sharks. The best known is the spiny dogfish Squalus acanthias, which is a common Northern Hemisphere shark. Spiny dogfish have a spine in front of each of their two dorsal fins to discourage predators. They feed on fish, cephalopods, and crabs, and are known to form schools of thousands of individuals.
