Great Hammerheads

Sphyrna mokarran

Great hammerheads are the largest of the hammerhead sharks. They have a particular taste for stingrays. By cruising slowly over bottom sediments, their boomerang head acts like a minesweeper, picking up the bioelectric currents of stingrays burried under the sand and mud. The hammerhead must get within about a meter to pick up the stingray; as soon as the shark detects such a burried snack is turns sharply to home in on its prey and scoop it up from the mud. Great hammerheads will happily eat other meat than just stingrays, though, such as boney fish, squid, crabs, and octopodes.
