Tilt-Rotor Aircraft

A tilt-rotor craft has large ducted fans in its wings that point forward for normal flight but which are rotated to provide downward thrust at low speed. The wings fold up when landing to reduce the space needed to park the vehicle. Tilt-rotor aircraft are often called "jumpcraft." Jumpcraft have largely replaced helicopters as go-anywhere, utility aircraft. They are powered by hydrogen fuel cells.

Vectored Thrust Aircraft

TL 9 vectored thrust aircraft use one or more variable-bypass hydrogen turbofans for thrust and traditional airfoils for lift. At low speeds, where normal aircraft would stall out, a vectored thrust craft diverts the jet stream from the turbofans or turbojets downward to provide upward thrust and hold the vehicle aloft. At TL 9, the wings will generally fold up when landing to reduce the space needed to park the vehicle.

Fixed Wing Aircraft

A cargo Plane is not much different from one of today's heavy lift jet planes. It uses hydrogen turbofans to economically haul heavy loads up to halfway around the world. Special wing mechanisms allow the plane to take off on a significantly shorter runway than modern jumbo jets, but it still needs runways for take-off and landing.

A Super Sonic Transport is optimized for hauling passengers very quickly from one part of the world to another. It uses variable bypass hydrogen turbo-scramjets for propulsion at up to Mach 10.

An Orbital Clipper is a spaceplane that can reach low orbit. While in atmosphere, it uses variable bypass turbo-ramjets to scoop air as a propellant for it's fission powered MHD rockets. After rising above the air, liquid propellant (typically water, but ammonia or liquid hydrogen can be used) is injected into the MHD rocket chamber and used for thrust to reach orbit and for deorbiting. After deorbiting it glides back to the ground.
